Should
you use a Laptop Specialist?
Most people think that a computer is a computer. Laptop
and Desktop computers use the same operating systems, ram and hard drives. So
why not just take my laptop to any computer repair shop? If you have a software
issue then any good computer technician can deal with the issue on a laptop
just as easy as a desktop.
If you are having a hardware issue or any problem that
requires the laptop to be taken apart there is a world of difference. Owning
the Computer doctor Boise and working on computers for over 20 years I have
seen some real butcher jobs on laptops. Unlike a desktop everything in a laptop
is smaller and crammed into a small space. About 80% of a laptop is made of
plastic. Laptops get hot and heat is not a friend of plastic.
You need to understand that most computer technicians
charge the same flat fee or hourly fee when they work on a laptop or desktop.
Most repairs take much longer time wise to repair verses a desktop. Replacing a
hard drive on a desktop takes about four times as long as on a laptop. Over the
years I have seen the results of working to quickly when repairing a laptop.
When looking for a repair shop you should ask if they charge more to work on a
laptop than a desktop. If they say something like “it depends on the problem”
that is a good sign.
Today the computer repair business is crowded with repair
shops and mobile repair people. Repair shops need to try and be competitive
with their pricing. Too many times a customer will be quoted a price that
simply cannot be possible. Remember I said the field was crowded with repair
people not qualified repair technicians. If you are thinking a big box repair
shop would hire better people, you need to think again. Most large well known
repair shops pay their technicians somewhere near minimum wage.
You want to find a repair tech that is Microsoft
certified, listed with the Better Business Bureau, and licensed or registered
to operate a repair business. You want someone to call if you continue to have
the same problem down the road. Any business that does not have a website is
not really in business. Finally, if you are not too computer savvy try and find
a technician that can explain the problem in plain English.
